Lavado de EPIs en la Industria Química: Riesgos y Normativa
¿Por qué el lavado doméstico anula la protección de la prenda?
In the industrial sector in Catalonia, especially in environments with chemical, flame-resistant, or ATEX risks, the management of workwear is a key issue of legal and physical safety, not just hygiene. Even so, many companies allow home washing, which entails significant risks. According to Royal Decree 773/1997, the employer is responsible for the maintenance, cleaning, and disinfection of personal protective equipment (PPE). If the worker washes the clothing at home, the "chain of custody" is broken, and the company cannot guarantee that the garment maintains its properties, leaving it legally exposed in the event of an accident. Home washing negates protection for several reasons: the use of common fabric softeners and detergents can make flame-resistant garments flammable or remove protective chemical treatments; domestic washing machines do not ensure adequate temperatures or cycles, leaving hazardous residues in the fabric; and there is a risk of cross-contamination in the home. In contrast, industrial laundries guarantee controlled processes, certified removal of contaminants, regulatory compliance, and complete traceability of each garment. Furthermore, the use of RFID technology allows for monitoring the washing history, lifespan, and location of each piece of PPE, automatically removing garments that are no longer safe. Therefore, outsourcing the service and opting for leasing not only improves efficiency but also eliminates risks and ensures that workwear complies with the safety regulations required in the industrial, food, and pharmaceutical sectors.
